Beginner Youth

Skills Days

$60 per session

Whether you are looking for practice time between classes or need to brush up on specific skills, these self-guided skills days are a great opportunity to practice with someone of equal experience and get out on the water. Students will choose their focus and receive the appropriate skill checkoff sheets before heading out on the water. There are three different skill day focus options:

Advanced Sailing
Practice maintaining points of sail, tacking, jibing, managing speed, heaving-to and reefing.

Docking 
Practice sailing off and on the dock under a variety of conditions.

Crew Overboard
Practice performing the Figure 8 and Quick Stop maneuvers.

Participants will take turns skippering the boat.

Skipper’s Duties: Get the boat ready to sail, assign crew positions, give safety briefing, sail the boat safely off the dock at the start of the day and back at the end of the day.

Required: Basic Keelboat certification or the equivalent necessary (Plus some sailing experience within the last year).

Limitations:

• PM time slot: sailors must be able to control the boat under higher afternoon winds.
• The boat must have 2-5 persons aboard.
• Navigation is limited to Clipper Cove.

Heavy Weather Clinic

Students become proficient in early identification of strong wind conditions and proactive in applying the techniques of de-powering a boat for those conditions. Students will sail, assign crew positions, give safety briefing, sail the boat safely off the dock at the start of the day and back at the end of the day.

Please carefully review the checkout sheet bellow and verify that you are confident in all the required maneuvers and concepts. **If you have the equivalent of one or our classes, you have the option to use the checkout as a placement tool to test out of the pre-req for a class.

Building on skills learned in Intermediate Teen, in this class students will be introduced to racing including the Rules of Sailing, starting sequences, course management, mark rounding techniques, advance boat handling, and race strategy. This class is designed for our most advanced youth sailors who already have a strong understanding of sailing theory and are able to demonstrate more advanced boat handling techniques in a wide range of conditions. A large component of this class will focus on teamwork as students will need to operate as a team within their boat in order to tackle the more complex components of racing in the platform of a double- handed dinghy.

Students will be sailing alongside TISC’s FJ Race Team, however the course is intended to develop advanced sailing skills and a child need not compete. Racing on the weekend following the course is an option so long as the student has demonstrated the skill necessary to do so and can be paired with either Skipper or Crew.

If participation in racing is desired, TISC staff should be consulted well ahead to guide you through the qualification / registration process. Email: manager@tisailing.org

The Junior Leadership program at TISC is designed for our oldest junior sailors who are looking to build their leadership skills while also continuing to develop their sailing knowledge and skills. This program is not intended for novice sailors. Students in our Junior Leadership Program will develop their leadership, communication, and teamwork skills. Students in their first year of the Junior Leadership Program will be Junior Instructors. Typically Junior Instructors are 15-16 years old and are confident and proficient dinghy skippers. In the mornings, Junior Instructors will be assigned to a Junior Sailing class where they will assist instructors and act as a leader for students on and off the water. In the afternoons Junior Instructors will participate in our Teen Sailing, Progressive Level 4 program where they will continue to develop their own sailing skills.

The Junior Leadership program at TISC is designed for our oldest junior sailors who are looking to build their leadership skills while also continuing to develop their sailing knowledge and skills. This program is not intended for novice sailors. Students in our Junior Leadership Program will develop their leadership, communication, and teamwork skills. Students in their second year of the Junior Leadership Program will be Instructors in Training. Typically Instructors in Training are 16-17 years old and are confident and proficient dinghy skippers with some keelboat experience. In the mornings, Instructors in Training will take on more responsibility in leading the Junior Sailing class which they are assigned to, including on the water coaching and delivering chalk talks on land. In the afternoons, Instructors in Training will either continue working with their Junior Program class or will take on a leadership role supervising at Adventure Camp.

Adventure Camp Option

San Francisco is famous for its windy summers. Some younger and lighter sailors can have a hard time in the strong winds and can lose interest. During Summer Junior Sailing Program, our youngest sailors have the option of spending their afternoons in Adventure Camp at no additional cost as opposed to continuing their sailing lessons. After lunch, those enrolled in Adventure Camp will meet up for kayaking, paddle boarding, and beach games. This is not a stand-alone class.

Extended Care Option

We offer an extended care program for parents of either need to drop their children off early or need the flexibility of picking them up a little late. Extended care extends the time that your child can spend on site as follows. 8:30AM - 9:00AM (programs start) and 4:00PM - 5:00PM. Extended Care is only available while our Summer programs are in session.

Private Lesson

Private lessons are a great opportunity for students to rapidly improve their skills in a one on one setting with one of our instructors. Private lessons can be taken in addition to any of junior sailing programs classes, as a stand alone class, or as recurring private instruction. Private lessons are scheduled on an individual basis, accordingly TISC is able to accommodate most schedules. Private lessons are offered at a minimum of 2hrs. For junior sailors, private lessons are offered in Bugs, Optimists, and FJs. Private lessons in J24s may also be offered to junior sailors in certain circumstances. We also offer private lessons for kayaks and paddle boards.

This class is designed for our most advanced youth sailors who already have a strong understanding of sailing theory and are able to demonstrate more advanced boat handling techniques in a wide range of conditions

Students will be sailing within our Advanced Youth class, however in addition to the goals of the standard course will be working on mastery of skill and will be competing in BAYS regattas following each session. Although skills and topics will be repeated, the student will gain mastery by refining each skill and gaining experience through much more time on the water.

Regattas will be organized through Bay Area Youth Sailing (http://www.bayarea-youthsailing.com/) and held locally at the end of each session for a total of 4 planned regattas. Parents will be sent information on how to register their child and will pay the registration fee (usually $40-$50). *Families using TISC’s scholarships should coordinate with the Program Manager to register for regattas.

TISC will provide boats, wetsuits, and lifejackets along with the team coach(s).

Parent engagement is a huge part of this program. TISC will facilitate and help coordinate transportation to and from regattas, however it will ultimately be the responsibility of each parent to ensure their child arrives at the locations. TISC will need as much help from parents as possible and will send out requests as needed.

Basic Keelboat

Our Basic Keelboat series is a US Sailing certified class. Upon successful completion of the class you get the official US Sailing BK sticker in your log book. During the first weekend students will work on building a solid foundation of sailing techniques. They will learn water safety, sailing terminology, sail trim, boat handling, and will get an introduction to the physics of sailing. Classroom time is devoted to understanding how a sailboat is propelled upwind. Other classroom topics include terminology, points of sail, and efficient sailing. Our goal is to get you out on the water as soon as possible.

In this progression course students will learn basic knots, rigging, sail adjustment, docking, steering a course, person in the water drills, and capsize/recovery drills. Be prepared to get wet! All necessary gear is available at TISC including wetsuits and spray gear (sizes may be limited). Bring sun protection (hats, sunglasses, sunscreen), water bottle, and a towel.
