Adaptive Sailing
The Treasure Island Sailing Center’s Adaptive Sailing Program strives to make sailing accessible to anybody with a desire to learn. Our program makes use of boats that keep sailors safe while still allowing for a fun, exciting and educational experience, including Access Dinghies and J24s. TISC works mostly with local programs promoting sailing for physically and developmentally disabled students. Non-affiliated individuals are welcome too!
TISC is committed to serving the adaptive community. However, due to the nature of sailing and the limitations of our facility, we are unable to accommodate all disabilities. To find out the specific requirements for participation, please contact TISC directly at 415-421-2225.
At TISC disabled sailors gain a sense of independence and self-confidence that can extend to life outside of sailing. TISC instructors and volunteers are trained to support the needs of each unique participant and promote safety both on and off the water. To better serve all participants, facility upgrades including the installment of an ADA-compliant ramp are currently in the TISC Facility Development plans.
Adaptive Sailing Orientations
Available for families and groups, this introductory sailing experience can accommodate most people with disabilities on our more stable 24ft sailboats. Please stop by or call the office to discuss your unique needs and how TISC may be able to help get your family or group out sailing. Flexible scheduling, please call.
Youth Co-Able Sailing Summer Camp
Offered in partnership with the Bay Area Association of Disabled Sailors (BAADS), this summer camp takes place at the BAADS facility on Pier 40 on the San Francisco waterfront. Students with disabilities can learn sailing with a friend in a small, stable and safe boat in the protected waters of McCovey Cove. Students sail in pairs to build teamwork, communication, and sailing skills, so we encourage you to register with a buddy. Buddies are not required to have a disability and staff will be able to pair students together who registered by themselves.
Summer Camp Full Day Session: Meets for 1 week Mon-Fri 9am-2pm, (5 classes 6 hours each- $200)
Visually Impaired Sailing
Offered in partnership with Blind Sail, SF Bay. Each boat has 2 trained sighted crew members and 2 visually impaired sailors. Students learn the basics of sailing while focusing on steering and trimming the sails. No previous experience required; sailors will be paired up based on ability. Instructors include sailors on local competitive Blind Sailing teams, so ask about race instruction!
