Students will continue to develop their sailing skills and prepare for racing. They become comfortable with on-the-water problem-solving, moving into a leadership role for the younger students by setting a good example, having a positive attitude, and being helpful in a constructive manner.
This class is for sailors who have graduated from Advanced Youth or Beginner Teen. Sailors practice skippering and crewing in Fevas, developing a solid understanding of sailing theory, working on teamwork, and taking on windier conditions. General skills learned include roll tacking, jibing, sailing a windward leg, sailing a reach, sailing downwind, and proper sail/boat trim. Theoretical knowledge includes seamanship (i.e., knot tying, sails and lines, hull and rigging), navigation, emergency procedure (i.e., the international signal of distress), and fundamental knowledge of equipment and use.
Students will learn the basic differences between sailing a keelboat v. a dinghy, and become familiar with rigging/de rigging, and sailing a J24. Students will also learn basic Seamanship Skills that apply to handling a boat of greater mass than a dinghy, both on and off the dock.
Experienced youth participants at TISC can start their journey as instructors. IITs receive training in leadership roles, including coaching fundamentals, safety management, and working with diverse young sailors. Participants will also gain practical experience by assisting instructors.
Afternoons will focus on developing their sailing skills. As part of our Junior Leadership Program, Instructor-in-Training is a pathway toward working as a Junior Instructor (ages 16 – 17). The IIT course is available as often as the sailors wish to continue their growth in leadership – there’s always more to learn!
