TISC is seeking, energetic, motivated, and passionate Sailing Instructors for its Youth and Adult Instructional Sailing Programs.  Several Part-Time positions are available, and 2-3 Full-Time positions may be available for qualified candidates.

Sailing Instructors are an integral part of the TISC community.  Instructors interact with youth and adults in programs with various levels of skill-building, community-building, competition, and non-boating education.  Sailing Instructors will run classes on their own and with the help of other staff.  Instructors are expected to provide structured classes, including chalk-talks, land drills, instructor demonstrations, water drills and fun activities, coach on the water from a powerboat, and provide reporting on skill progress to other TISC staff.

Instructors in youth classes are expected to be excellent with children, enthusiastic and welcoming to all people, and sensitive to the needs of our diverse population of sailors and soon-to-be=sailors, including many participants with low water comfort.  Instructors in our youth programs are also expected to have some facility with connecting STEM and other non-sailing topics to each days lessons. Instructors in TISC's youth programs are also expected to exemplify TISC's values of Growth, Resilience, Integrity and Teamwork in everything they do.

Instructors in adult programs should be comfortable in the adult learning environment, including giving longer presentations in the classroom, connecting participants short- and long-term expectations and goals to TISC's instruction, and generally helping to facilitate learning for participants have been away from educational environments for some time.

These positions will report to the Youth Program Director or the Executive Director.

Responsibilities:

  • Promote TISC's values of Growth, Resilience, Integrity and Teamwork on and off the water
  • Provide on-land and on-water instruction in sailing skills, using chalk-talks, land drills, demonstrations, water drills and games to promote fun and learning
  • Maintain a welcoming and safe environment, on and off the water, for all TISC participants and visitors
  • Track  and provide regular reporting on students' progress
  • Work with TISC staff to generate content, stories and other media to promote TISC mission and programming

Requirements:

  • Passionate about TISC Values - Growth, Resilience, Integrity and Teamwork
  • Some sailing and powerboating experience is required, but TISC can train the right individuals
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Strong interpersonal and time-management skills
  • Maintain safety standards 
  • Foster open communication and teamwork
  • California Safe Boater Card; First Aid and CPR Certifications; SafeSport Certification
  • COVID-19 vaccine, TB test, and background check is required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • US Sailing Small Boat or Keelboat Certifications or equivalent
  • USCG License or equivalent
  • Lifeguarding Certification

TISC is seeking, energetic, motivated, and passionate individuals to fill 2-3 positions as Waterfront Coordinators.  The position is part time, 2-3 days per week including Saturday and Sunday.  

Waterfront Coordinators are an important part of the TISC community.  "WC's" interact with youth and adult visitors to TISC and promote a safe and educational environment for all participants.  The Waterfront Coordinator's primary duties are to facilitate kayak and paddleboard rentals, including assisting participants with launching and landing their rented craft, providing basic instruction in paddling, suggesting fun and educational excursions in Clipper Cove, and keeping participants safe on the water.  Waterfront Coordinators should be very comfortable on and around the water, be enthusiastic and passionate about providing access to the bay, and are expected to exemplify TISC's values of Growth, Resilience, Integrity and Teamwork in everything they do.

Competency on a small powerboat is a requirement for this position.  TISC can provide training for the right candidate.

These positions will report to the Executive Director.

TISC is seeking an innovative and passionate educator join our team for our award-winning STEM and Sailing field trip program with the San Francisco Unified School District called Set Sail Learn. This position will be primarily responsible for teaching the on-shore lessons of the program, serve close to 1,500 youth per year during the spring and fall seasons. During the summer, qualified candidates can teach in our sailing instruction program or other programs. 

To excel in this role, the right candidate will have a background in education or science. TISC is looking for a person with strong interpersonal skills who enjoys a team environment.  The right candidate is incredibly enthusiastic, excels at managing groups of youth in unfamiliar settings, has a passion for DEI, Access and Inclusion on the water, and is committed to education and youth development.

This position will report to the Youth Program Director.  

Responsibilities:

  • Promote TISC's values of Growth, Resilience, Integrity and Teamwork in the classroom and on the waterfront
  • Use TISC curriculum and lesson plans to teach STEM-based lessons to groups of up to 16 youth at a time, twice a day
  • Reinforce basic water safety and environmental education to participants
  • Facilitate parent/chaperone involvement (where appropriate) in lessons and activities
  • Maintain a welcoming and safe environment, in the classroom and on the waterfront, for all TISC participants and visitors
  • Work with TISC staff to generate content, stories and other media to promote TISC mission and programming

Requirements:

  • Facility with basic scientific concepts, including the scientific method.  TISC provides training on specific classroom activities and lessons.
